A brief description of the student sustainability research program:

iDeaWORKS offers local businesses and not-for-profit organizations the opportunity to work with teams of Mohawk faculty and students to find innovative solutions to real-world challenges. The EPIC Industry Applied Research Project is an industry research challenge to provide students with rewarding experiential learning opportunities by partnering with industry to provide real-life problems/challenges and deliver effective technical solution within an academic semester. Students can be from any area of the Department of Engineering Technology. The IdeaWorks Catalyst fund also supports student opportunities by providing project funding to support materials and hiring. Proposals for ICF Projects can be submitted by any staff member and utlize students from any department.

A brief description of the faculty sustainability research program:

The IDEAWORKS Catalyst Fund is committed to fostering innovation and skills development opportunities across Mohawk College. It supports Mohawk faculty and staff to engage in applied research and scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) activities. The fund is designed to develop and build internal capacity for research and innovation by providing the funding needed for faculty and staff to turn their ideas into solutions. Past projects funded include: Brownfield testing and remediation; Isolation and Identification of psychrophilic (or psychotolerant) microbes from Canadian soil and lake samples; Comparative testing of restored and new windows for energy efficiency. All of the these projects support environmental sustainability. An example of a recently completed project is the Precision Agriculture Case Study whereby Mohawk student researchers explored the use of open-source Sentinel-2 satellites imagery to diagnose crop health.

A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research:

Mohawk College Library provides ongoing support of sustainability through many avenues. The library recognizes that higher education positively contributes to the sustainability movement and the library assists through the curation of library materials, creation of research guides (https://library.mohawkcollege.ca/topic-guides/environmental-sustainability) and the acquisition of varied resources that are accessible in multiple formats. Resources with a sustainability focus are interwoven throughout the collections. Positive outcomes include a consistent increase in usage statistics of sustainability materials over the past three years.
