Sustainability Initiative Fund Idea Bank Campaign

A brief description of the campaign (1st campaign):

The purpose of the Sustainability Initiatives Fund (SIF) is to provide all Mohawk College students with skills and knowledge to encourage greater awareness of environmental sustainability. The adoption of sustainable principles and practices will enable the College to provide a more environmentally conscious learning and working environment, while positioning Mohawk College as a leader in sustainability among post-secondary institutions.

The idea bank campaign is focused on collecting student ideas that support the enhancement of sustainability on campus. The top ideas are implemented the following year.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (1st campaign):

Through this campaign a number of projects with positive impacts have been achieved. These projects include; getting over 2000 incoming students to sign a pledge to not use disposable water bottles, generating funds to promote sustainability based events during orientation, and expanding the community garden to provide more space for groups and individuals to grow common fruits and vegetables for personal consumption.

The Human Services Sustainability Challenge

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

During the summer challenge, staff members at Mohawk recorded and submitted their daily sustainability activities for points. An example of a challenge would be; bringing a reusable water bottle to work, or bringing a homemade lunch to work.
Staff would submit their daily entries, and daily winners would receive sustainability prizes such as a farm bag, coffee vouchers, reusable water bottles or mugs, etc.

During the two week campaign the Sustainability Office recorded over 400 actions by 35 participants looking to make a positive impact.
