In 2007, the Sustainability Subcommittee developed a Report on the Future of Sustainability at Missouri State. According to the Introduction of this report, “Environmental sustainability is a term currently in use to describe the relatively simple idea of providing for the needs of people today without compromising the needs of people in the future. Common use of the term began with the publication of the World Commission on Environment and Development report, Our Common Future (1987, also known as the Brundtland Report), which defined sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
