Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
ZipGrow Towers Program
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In the summer of 2016 a basement storage room was repurposed into a hydroponic growing room for the innovative ZipGrow vertical growing towers program. Chartwells and MSU Dining Services use the herbs and greens harvested from the ZipGrow towers in a wide variety of dishes prepared for the dining halls. This initiative has reduced the impact on the supply chain of campus food and lowered the use of energy for harvesting, packaging, and transportation. It has also provided hands-on learning experience for student interns and gained public attention serving as an example to the community and other universities.
