Flip The Switch (Campus Wide Energy Competitions)
A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:
For several years, MSU participated in Campus Conservation Nationals, a national energy saving competition among colleges and universities. The goal of this competition is to reduce as much electricity and/or water as possible during the three weeks of the competition. Missouri State reported electricity for 22 campus buildings and organized outreach materials and events across campus during the competition. Organizers trained Building Captains in each building to help encourage energy saving practices. The campaign produced excellent results and primarily engaged faculty and staff across campus. Upon the discontinuation of this national program, our Flip The Switch (campus wide energy competition) was implemented aiming for the same results. Some of the activities included: Hour Without Power, Take the Stairs Challenge, and an Innovative Idea Competition.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Campus Conservation Nationals in 2015 led to an 11.1% energy reduction, placing MSU in the top 20 school, in addition to awards for outreach and behavior change campaigns.

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):
The Eco Challenge was held October 15th through 29th, 2015 in celebration of Energy Awareness Month. Twenty-two teams comprised of students, faculty, and staff participated in various challenges aimed at building awareness and changing habits. This challenge provided participants with the tools and inspiration to reduce their impact on the planet.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
During the course of this campaign, MSU teams saved 861 gallons of water, saved 152 pounds of CO2, and used organic ingredients and cooked with zero waste for 42 meals. MSU teams also converted 1,080 minutes from indoor to outdoor time and ate 18 meals outdoors.

Every semester, the dining halls conduct a program to measure the amount of food wasted in the dining centers by collecting all the waste during a selected day and then dividing that out by the number of customers to determine the waste per customer. In addition to allowing them to collect the data, it also serves as an educational opportunity because the food waste is on display in the dining hall throughout the day. Initially, the food waste display program assisted in reducing the food waste generation from one and half pounds to less than a half pound per person. In 2017 waste was reduced from .25 pounds to .24 pounds per guest.
Missouri State has participated in RecycleMania for several years, a competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities on campus. Over an 8-week period each spring, schools report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are ranked by per capita recycling rate.
