Student Sustainability and Recycling Coordinator Program

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
Student Recycling Coordinators assist with outreach and recycling in the residence halls. Coordinators have four main duties:
(1) provide education and raise awareness regarding sustainability and recycling for their assigned residence halls,
(2) perform recycling services for the Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services facilities following established procedures and guidelines,
(3) work with floor volunteers to handle the recycling processes of their assigned residence hall,
(4) serve on and/or support the Live Life Green Residence Life Sustainability Committee.
A brief description of how the student educators are selected:
Students submit an application and complete an interview process through Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services. Candidates are selected according to passion and experience.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
The students receive training and expectations from the Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations and Facilities Graduate Assistant regarding the educational component of their position (including programming, publicity, etc.). They will continue to receive ongoing training throughout the year as well. Recycling Coordinators receive additional training from the Custodial Coordinator and Custodial Supervisor regarding recycling services procedures and guidelines.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):
Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services supports the hiring, training, and pay for the student workers. Students earn $8.25 per hour with 12-20 hours expected per week.

Missouri State University Eco-Reps is a face-to-face educational program, where students engage with their peers at various high-trafficked locations on campus. Eco-Reps also help plan and implement student-focused outreach activities for campus-wide events, such as RecycleMania, Trash Connection, and Flip the Switch. There have been twenty Eco-Reps who have completed training and outreach activities since 2016.
A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):
The selection process for Eco-Reps is not competitive. Membership is open to all students who have a passion for sustainability, are committed to completing the required training and participating in the various activities.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach (2nd program):
The student educators all receive an initial training that provides them with the skills they need to effectively and confidently engage with students. Specifically, Eco-Reps learn about the best methods to educate, increase involvement and encourage behavior change. They also have additional training for specific events and skills they will use daily basis. For example, Eco-Reps participated in a training seminar covering verbal and nonverbal communication skills in preparation for the Caught Green Handed event. During the training they heard from an industry expert on communication and were able to skill practice what they learned. Students also brainstorm and create scripts for all Eco-Rep engagement activities, allowing them to effectively engage students all across the campus and deliver a consistent message. While the Sustainability Coordinator and Intern provide most of the materials, the students are encouraged to provide ideas and feedback regarding the activities and materials used for this program.

Currently, the Eco-Rep program does not receive formal financial support. However, the Sustainability Coordinator and Sustainability Intern provide substantial support to the program by administering or coordinating all necessary trainings and educational materials (e.g. brochures) the Eco-Reps need to effectively engage with students.
