A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
In February 2011, a student submitted a water-saving proposal to the Sustainability Commission, a student-initiated body to evaluate proposals and allocate funds to approved projects. The proposal would install water-saving fixtures like low-flow shower heads and sink faucet aerators in all on-campus dormitories. In addition, 5-minute shower timers will be placed in bathrooms to make students more aware of their water usage. Leak-detecting dye tablets will also be placed in toilets to alert residents of leaks, further preventing water waste. This program began as a trial period in two of the dormitories and the saved water was significant. Implemented in all of the dormitories on campus, this proposal is estimated to save 32 million gallons of water per semester.
