A copy of the institution's definition of sustainability research:
Mills College strives to be a model of campus and community sustainability. We encourage our students, faculty, and staff to integrate principles of sustainability into all aspects of College life—academic, administrative, social, and operational. In so doing, we link our core mission of educating thoughtful, creative leaders with our role as responsible stewards of the world in which we live. We have adopted the AASHE-STARS definition of sustainability research, as follows:
Sustainability research focuses on a key principle of sustainability (such as social equity or environmental stewardship); addresses a sustainability challenge (such as climate change or poverty); or furthers our understanding of the connections among of societal and environmental challenges. Sustainability research leads toward solutions that support economic prosperity, social well-being, and ecological health. [from STARS manual p. 67]
