MSU Culinary Services was awarded the Grand Prize for the Residential Dining Facility category for the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) 2020 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards. The university’s entry in this category recognizes the allergen-free dining hall Thrive at Owen Hall. Thrive is Certified Allergen Free From the Big 8 allergens (eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat) plus gluten. As the number of students reporting food allergies continued to rise by nearly 175% each year, MSU placed emphasis on expanding our food allergy program, with Thrive serving as an essential component to success. FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) also honored MSU with the inaugural Best Campus Dining award for Thrive. A brief description of the mentoring relationship and activities:
MSU serves as a mentor through the Michigan Campus Sustainability Collective, coordinated by the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum. Multiple Michigan-based higher education institutions are represented in the network, made up of sustainability staff and/or sustainability champions from the schools. MSU has shared best practices and lessons learned with members on a variety of topics, including: advice on co-generation power plants, developing a sustainable food procurement guide, green building standards, and virtual engagement strategies. MSU has also helped recruit additional schools to join the network.
MSU also mentored the University of South Florida as they explored funding and installing a green roof on their campus. MSU staff and students shared lessons learned with staff and students at USF.
