MSU Waste Warriors

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
The Surplus Store & Recycling Center's (SSRC) Waste Warriors program is designed to reduce the amount of waste disposed of on campus. The program builds knowledge and leadership by empowering individuals who are passionate about working with others and promoting action to champion goals outlined in the SSRC strategic plan. Waste Warriors cultivate waste reduction and the utilization of waste as a resource by training and empowering the MSU community to promote these practices among their peers.

--Think critically about the problems of improving the human condition equitably in this and future generations, while conserving environmental systems necessary to support healthy and vibrant societies.
--Make resources promoting waste prevention and reduction at MSU more accessible.
--Solve problems by applying sustainability concepts and principles.
--Develop a peer education system and structure that allows Waste Warriors to learn, teach, and lead by:
--Fostering peer education,

A brief description of the employee educators program (2nd program):
SLE/RHS Culinary Services has volunteer full-time staff Eco Ambassadors. This advisory program functions to serve as a positive influence for campus sustainability within the kitchens. They are trained on sustainability initiatives programs and serve as a resource to share best practices, becoming subject matter experts in sustainability. The position is not meant to take them away from their day job. In their regular duties, they assist with training other team members, posting materials, educating student employees and overall encourage others. Eco Ambassadors also spend roughly one hour per month outside of the work space to meet with the SLE Chief Sustainability Officer to get updated on any process changes or assistance. Overall, participants promote a positive work environment towards sustainability by existing as a resource to provide information, focus, and direction for all members of the MSU community and beyond. They also excite, energize, and inform staff and guests about sustainable practices of SLE/RHS and recruit others for further involvement. This program directly supports values and goals related to sustainability outlined in the division's strategic plan and aligns with the Faculty and Staff success theme of the university strategic plan.
