A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
For this credit, only researchers in MSU's Tenure system were included for both the inventory of faculty members conducting sustainability research and the total faculty count (i.e., with assistant, associate, or full professor rank). Fixed-term faculty, adjunct faculty, and academic staff (e.g., research associates, specialists) were excluded from both the inventory and total researcher count. MSU's 2019 research inventory was used as a starting list. The list was reviewed to remove faculty that are no longer employed at the university. To identify additional tenure-track faculty, the MSU Scholars database was searched using keywords representing sustainability and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (i.e., sustainability challenges such as poverty, health equity, gender equality, food and hunger, environmental justice). In addition, centers with affiliated faculty that conduct sustainability research were checked (e.g., Environmental Science and Policy Program, Center for Gender in Global Context, Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities, Center for Interdisciplinary). Departments focused in sustainability were also checked against the list (e.g., Department of Community Sustainability, Fisheries and Wildlife). This provided a cross check and significant confidence in the data. MSU's academic departments are defined as degree-granting units within the university.
