A brief description of the graduate-level degree program:

The Master of Science in Community Sustainability provides students with opportunities to engage in integrated and applied research and acquire professional skills.

In addition to meeting the requirements of the university and of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, students must meet the requirements specified below. Students may not be admitted to both the Master of Science degree in Community Sustainability and the Master of Science degree in Sustainable Tourism and Protected Area Management.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Community Sustainability is designed to enable students to generate new knowledge in complementary fields responsive to rapidly changing conditions in our natural environment and agricultural systems.

Sustainable Tourism and Protected Area Management - Masters & PhD

A brief description of the graduate degree program (2nd program):

The Master of Science degree in Sustainable Tourism and Protected Area Management provides students with opportunities to engage in integrated and applied research and to acquire professional skills for the study, management, administration and planning of tourism and protected areas under the overarching concept of community sustainability.

In addition to meeting the requirements of the university and of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, students must meet the requirements specified below. Students may not be admitted to both the Master of Science degree in Community Sustainability and the Master of Science degree in Sustainable Tourism and Protected Area Management.

Environmental Science & Policy Program (ESPP) Doctoral Dual Major

A brief description of the graduate degree program (3rd program):

The interdepartmental dual major in environmental science and policy is administered by the College of Social Science. The dual major is available only to those students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. degree program that involves environmental science and policy and who have a graduate major at Michigan State University. The student does not have the option of completing a dual major in environmental science and policy alone.

The educational objectives of the interdepartmental program are to (1) develop interdisciplinary knowledge and skills across natural and social science disciplines related to the environment and to enable collaboration with researchers and practitioners from other disciplines towards addressing environmental challenges; (2) gain knowledge of and experience with science based environmental policies, including how scientific knowledge can contribute to practical policies and how interdisciplinary collaboration can improve the effectiveness of policies; and (3) gain practical experience in communicating scientific research to multiple audiences, including scientific communities and the general public.

Graduate Specialization - Graduate Specialization in Gender, Justice, and Environmental Change

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate:

The Graduate Specialization in Gender, Justice, and Environmental Change is administered by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Social Science. The primary administrative unit for this specialization is the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The Graduate Specialization in Gender, Justice, and Environmental Change is available as an elective for students who are enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs at Michigan State University. The goal of this program is to provide graduate students from different academic backgrounds with analytical and methodological tools to address environmental issues from the perspectives of gender relations and social justice. Students will be encouraged to develop an understanding of global perspectives on environmental issues in view of local-global linkages. The program will prepare students to foster the growth of research, service, and interdisciplinary collaboration in the fields of gender and environmental studies and to increase knowledge of the relationships between gender and domestic and international environmental issues.

Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management - Graduate Certificate

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate (2nd program):

The Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy and Management provides students with interdisciplinary training necessary to plan, manage, monitor and evaluate climate change mitigation projects that seek to retain or sequester carbon in forest ecosystems. Students will gain specific expertise needed internationally to participate in market-based, climate change mitigation activities such as the United Nations Collaborative Program on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). The graduate certificate is available online only.

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate (3rd program):

The Graduate Certificate in Environmental and Social System Modeling is designed for students who desire to understand a variety of modeling techniques used to address environmental problems that span human and natural systems. The certificate program exposes students to a range of state-of-the-art techniques including agent-based modeling, systems dynamics modeling, multilevel modeling, and structural equation modeling.
