A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:

Michigan State University provides sustainable wages to all employees by ensuring that minimum wage is paid as required by federal and State of Michigan law, as well as adhering to all legally mandated requirements for the payment of overtime premiums. In addition, regular employees (faculty, staff and others employed on a 50% or greater basis for 9 months or more) are generally paid wages significantly in excess of minimum wage. These wages are determined by negotiations with representatives of employees governed by collective bargaining agreements, collaboration with representatives of non-bargained for employees and continual review of wages paid to similarly situated employees in the appropriate labor markets. Regular employees are also eligible for benefits that further increase their total compensation, including contributions toward health and dental benefits, life insurance, travel accident insurance, educational benefits, etc.
