The Miami University Sustainability Committee promotes environmentally, socially and economically sustainable practices at Miami University that improve human and environmental health and well-being. It fosters collaboration among Miami stakeholders to identify and communicate about campus-wide sustainability projects ensures continued institutional focus, and tracks and reports progress towards meeting Miami’s Sustainability Commitments and Goals.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Miami University coordinates sustainability across the entire institution through the Sustainability Commitment and Goals (SCAG). These six sustainability goals foster collaborative efforts across students, staff, and faculty, a process directed by the sustainability office. Miami University’s Sustainability Committee does not implement the SCAG but helps communicate with entities that implement these policies and programs and also report on progress in these areas. Through the combined efforts across campus and the SCAG, Miami University has:
-Reduced energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 36% and 44% since 2008, respectively.
-Certified nine buildings as LEED Silver and two at LEED Gold on the Oxford campus between October 2016-March 2018.
-Transformed eight acres of land that was farmed using traditional techniques are now farmed using organic techniques by Miami’s Institute for Food farm.
-Drafted a sustainable procurement policy
-Drafted a LEED Green Cleaning Policy
-Been awarded Bronze by the League of American Bicyclists
-Reduced the total number of parking passes by 9%
-Had a total of 153 Lean projects completed between in FY2017, with a total cost avoidance of $2,478,728 and cost reduction of $841,863. Over 40% of the projects specifically identified “Going Green” as a goal.
-Included “Go Green”, a 3-hour seminar for Miami’s Lean training program, a regular continuing education program for Miami’s lean certification. Forty-two Miami staff attended the fall 2017 and spring 2018 sessions and the seminar
-Completed a Carbon Footprint Analysis detailing including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emission types for FY2018.
