A brief description of the institution’s wellness and/or employee assistance program(s):
Student/Employee Assistance Program (Personal Counseling)
Full and part-time students & employees of the MGH Institute who may be experiencing difficulties that affect their personal lives or program performance are encouraged to use the Mass General Brigham Student/Employee Assistance Program (SAP/EAP) for consultations, short-term counseling, information, and referral. Counselors are on campus two half-days each week to offer IHP students assessment, referral, and short-term counseling (up to six visits). The SAP is housed in the IHP Student and Alumni Center, Building 34. Students can be seen in any of Mass General Brigham SAP/EAP’s nine offices or speak with a counselor over the phone. For more information on how the SAP can help, or to schedule an appointment, call (866) 724-4327. The SAP/EAP offers assistance with all types of personal, family or school-related concerns. The SAP/EAP provides free, confidential, and voluntary assessments, short-term problem-focused counseling, and referrals for treatment or other assistance.

The MGH Institute of Health Professions also has a Wellness Council to promote and coordinate support for the physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being of IHP students. This mission is accomplished through open dialogue to coordinate existing resources and share best-practices while also exploring new opportunities to grow the Institute’s approaches to student wellness. Including students, faculty, staff, and alumni in this initiative ensures the Council benefits from a wide variety of perspectives and the Council’s work respects and includes all stakeholders. The goals of the council are as followed.

1. Foster a shared sense of community-wide responsibility for supporting student health and wellness
2. Reduce stigma and misinformation about issues related to student wellness at the IHP and in society
3. Optimize communication and cooperation of staff and faculty responding to students in crisis
4. Promote resilience and non-competitive peer-to-peer support through new programming – including the importance of lifelong self-care and well-being strategies for health care providers
5. Develop new, student-centered publicity efforts for existing resources (internal and external)
6. Explore innovative supports for student wellness customized for graduate health science students
