We encourage sustainable practices surrounding our move-in process. For the past several years the Student Involvement and Leadership office (SILP) have partnered with the Office of Sustainability to manage the waste that is generated during student arrival. The Office of Sustainability creates educational and directional signage to be placed around the waste and recycling bins at each of the first-year halls, and this past year the office also promoted this educational tool on social media. In this way, the first time a new student goes to dispose of or recycle an item, they are immediately drawn into an education interaction with sustainability. The Office of Sustainability has also historically participated in the service & involvement fair during Welcome Week. Along with many other clubs and organizations, The Office of Sustainability promotes their leadership opportunities, community garden volunteering, campus composting, and a host of other related programs. In past years, SILP have also worked with the Sustainability office in our own planning of the event to operate as sustainably as possible. For example, the Director of Sustainability helped SILP make a shift from handing out bottled water at our hospitality tents and at the New Student Games to filling large coolers of water and asking everyone to fill their personal water bottles.
