A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Each year, the Office of Sustainability sends information about sustainability programming, student groups, and activities to the Student Society of McGill University for inclusion in the undergraduate student handbook. This handbook is freely offered to all undergraduate students.
Campus Life and Engagement (CLE) organized an Amazing Race event for the Discover McGill Off-campus Connects (OCX) event in Fall 2022. The Office of Sustainability had three stops on the route, including a stop at the Trottier Building Smart Waste Bin, one at a Little Free Library, and the pedestrianized zone of McTavish St. Discover McGill OCX also included a Waste Relay game to educate participants in proper waste sorting habits.
CLE also organized an Amazing Race event for the Discover McGill Grad Connects event, which featured sustainability stops, including one at the Trottier Building Smart Waste Bin (designed by graduate students).
The Office of Sustainability also presented an introduction to sustainability workshop during the Re-Discover McGill event (Aug. 30), which informed students about the Sustainability Projects Fund and encouraged them to think of project proposals they might implement in future.
Moreover, in Fall 2022, Campus Life and Engagement pursued event certification for 9 major orientation events through the Sustainable Event Certification Program. The McGill Office of Sustainability, which oversees the program, provides large banners to event organizers to promote the certification program and provide awareness about sustainability efforts on campus. As part of the certification, event organizers commit to communicating 3 sustainability aspects to event participants. These events also featured waste educators, students trained to help attendees sort waste properly. Approximately 10,000 people attended these events. Faculty Frosh events were also certified by the Sustainable Event Certification program.
