A brief description of the institution’s wellness and/or employee assistance program(s):
McGill Student Wellness Hub
The Student Wellness Hub addresses students’ holistic health and wellness needs. It provides access to basic physical and mental health services, as well as health promotion and peer support programs, in locations at both the Macdonald and downtown campuses.
The Hub offers specialized programming related to issues that have a major impact on academic performance for broad segments of the student population. In the university’s latest assessment of student health (2016), stress, anxiety, depression, addictive behaviours, and sleep issues were all reported to have an impact on academic performance for more than 1 out of 5 students. The Hub’s programming is geared towards helping students overcome these challenges and meet their academic objectives.
The Hub also houses the Healthy Living Annex, which brings together a team of professionals and student peer supporters who focus on awareness, prevention, and early intervention. Coordinating health promotion and outreach activities on campus, the Annex helps students learn about the different components of their own well-being, navigate the healthcare system, and make informed choices about their health.
The Hub’s on-campus team - which includes general practitioners, nurses, psychiatrists, counsellors, social workers, and dietitians - focuses on short-term, episodic care for students facing common mental and physical health concerns during their studies. These professionals are also equipped to diagnose more complex issues and connect students with more appropriate care off-campus.
In addition to the physical location of the Student Wellness Hub, there is also a Virtual Wellness Hub where students can find more information about their healthcare options and can access online self-help resources, particularly if they need support while waiting for their appointment with a healthcare professional.
McGill HR Health and Well-being Program
The McGill Human Resources Health & Well-Being Program team is actively involved in promoting and encouraging employee health and well-being by offering employees events and challenges focused on a variety of health related topics, information, tips and links to health and wellness resources. Employee and Family Assistance program - EFAP
The Employee Family Assistance Program is available 24 hours per day, seven days per week. It can be accessed by phone, online, or via a mobile app. This program is available to regular staff members who are members of the McGill University benefits program, their spouse and dependent children.
