The overall role of the Sub-Committee on Environment is to monitor the implementation and success of McGill's Environmental Policy. Its specific mandate is:
1. to inventory and review relevant University policies, decisions, management practices and other actions to ensure consistency with McGill's Environmental Policy;
2. to review and recommend updates to the University's Environmental Policy;
3. to measure McGill's performance relative to relevant indicators, including policies adopted and actions taken by other universities;
4. to set targets and measure progress and compliance towards reaching those targets;
5. to receive suggestions from the University community and refer environmental issues to appropriate services and committees;
6. to propose new environment-conservation initiatives and identify the resources needed for implementation;
7. to direct environmental issues that do not fall within the SCPD mandate to appropriate University committees for follow-up and recommendations;
8. to devise an ongoing environmental awareness program and communications strategy for the McGill community in conjunction with the University Relations Office, so that all staff, students and visitors may be sensitized to the need for responsible management and may be motivated to participate in McGill's environmental plan;
9. to report at every meeting of the SCPD and to the University at large through the appropriate channels (e.g., the McGill Reporter) on goals and performance on such matters as may arise pertaining to:
* purchasing policies and practices,
* energy conservation (electricity, water, oil, natural gas) and use of renewable energies,
* fuel use for University operations and transportation of students and staff to and from the University,
* waste reduction and management (reduce, re-use and recycling programs),
* environmental safety and conservation-design, operation and maintenance of buildings and grounds,
* and all other issues relevant to the Committee's mandate.

The Subcommittee on the Environment should be limited to ten members and should include:
* three members of the academic staff, including one from the Macdonald Campus, one from the downtown campus, and one from the McGill School of Environment;
* three student members, one each from PGSS, SSMU and MCSS;
* four members of the administrative staff, one from Ancillary Services, one from Facilities Management and Development, one from the office of the Chief Information Officer (approved per resolution SCE meeting September 8, 2008) and the Manager of the Environmental Safety Office;
* one member-at-large to be appointed by the Senate Committee on Physical Development.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Office of Sustainability is to create a culture of sustainability at McGill.
The office will encourage and unite the efforts of students, faculty, staff and administrators to incorporate principles of sustainability into university operations, campus living and learning, and into its relations with the broader community. It explores ways in which McGill can integrate social, environmental and economic considerations to provide input to University decisions and develops partnerships that encourage and facilitate the cooperation of all members of the McGill community in applying the principles of sustainability.
