A brief description of the program or practice:
Grounds staff select drought tolerant trees, shrubs and perennial plants, such as replacing traditional grass with red fescue (a shade and more drought-tolerant grass). In addition, compost is used to improve the capacity of water retention for most of our beds and we also cover beds with mulch in order to lessen the use of water. Furthermore, beneficial mycorrhizae are used at planting time, facilitating a natural symbiotic process where plants can better establish themselves in our landscaping by colonizing the root system of the plants, helping the plants withstand droughts as well as assisting them with nutrient absorption.
In new landscaping, focus is made on replacing annuals with perennial plantings that would require less maintenance and watering.
