A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Greening McGill: In partnership with the City of Montreal, McGill converted a downtown street that runs through campus (McTavish Street, between Sherbrooke and Dr. Penfield) into a pedestrian zone. The University then undertook a number of initiatives to enhance the natural environment for both the McGill and local Montreal communities. These initiatives included: • Eliminating parking in the area • Phasing out public vehicle circulation (with the exception of emergency vehicles and vehicles transporting persons with disabilities) • Restricting deliveries to several buildings to 7:00 a.m - 11:00 a.m., Monday to Friday. • Lining the street with flowering planters and benches • Newly landscaping squares to create welcoming green space for the community • Creating a bicycle path along University St • Increasing the number of bike racks on campus to encourage bike travel The multistakeholder approach (including consultations with both internal and external stakeholders) was particularly useful in addressing challenges and identifying opportunities for further improvements towards making the area more amenable to all as a community space.
