Total energy consumption (electric and non-electric)

Total energy consumption, performance year:
2,990,334.20 MMBtu

Clean and renewable energy sources

Clean and renewable electricity

Clean and renewable electricity (report kilowatt-hours):
kWh MMBtu
Imported electricity from certified/verified clean and renewable sources (i.e., bundled green power purchases) 87,320,000 Kilowatt-hours 297,935.84 MMBtu
Electricity from on-site, clean and renewable sources (rights retained/retired) 77,576 Kilowatt-hours 264.69 MMBtu

A brief description of the certified/verified sources of clean and renewable electricity:
MIT and two other Boston-based organizations signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) in August 2016 that led to the construction of a 650-acre solar farm in North Carolina called Summit Farms. The data here are provided by the site operator and verified by a third-party energy manager from the Summit Farms solar power PPA. The kWh value of purchased renewable electricity is used to calculate the MTCO2e value that is used to adjust the Scope 2 emissions reported in OP-1 and OP-2.

A brief description of the on-site renewable electricity generating facilities/devices:
There are five rooftop solar photovoltaic systems. Together, these systems are designed to produce an estimated 80,000 kWh of clean energy annually. PV installations are found on the roofs of the Stratton Student Center, the Alumni Pool Building, Hayden Library, the MIT Museum, and the Sloan School of Business. MIT retains all RECs on these systems.
