MIT Working Green Committee

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):

The mission of the Working Green Committee, Staff for Sustainability, is to develop and deliver programs that educate administrative and support staff at MIT about sustainability with a focus on recycling, reducing and reusing goods. Efforts include identifying/addressing gaps in staff understanding about working and living sustainability, and promotes the reuse revolution on campus.The Working Green Committee supports the staff Green ambassadors in many departments across campus. The ambassadors take responsibility for greening efforts and education in their offices/labs. The WGC hosts and manages the monthly Choose to Reuse program, which is open to the entire MIT community, and WGC members volunteer to staff the event.

Green Labs Program

A brief description of the employee educators program (2nd program):

MIT researchers have the opportunity to get certified as Green Lab Leaders by completing three levels of reporting and training. In September 2019, the MIT Green Labs Program relaunced the 'How to be a Green Lab at MIT' course in the MIT Atlas Learning Center. The goal of this course is to provide recommendations and techniques to researchers and staff working in labs that can be applied to conserve energy and resources. These goals are intended to help MIT reach its stated goal of 32% greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions by 2030, as well as increase user knowledge in the area of sustainable research.

The course is listed as recommended for all incoming MIT researchers, and all MIT researchers are encouraged to take it.

A brief description of all other employee peer-to-peer sustainability outreach and education programs:

Sustainability Lunch and Learn: The Office of Sustainability hosts 8 Lunch and Learns a year during the academic year. These are on specific topics that are relevant to ongoing work and also relevant to the audience which is mostly facilities staff and MITOS partners. Approximately 60 staff members attend each lunch and learn. The presenters are experts in their field and vary from staff members to researchers to students. The goal is to educate the audience on current happenings in campus sustainability.
