A brief description of the wildlife habitat program, policy, or practice:
The college has 118 acres of forest located on campus. It is the largest green space left in the city of Maryville, TN, where the campus is located. There are trails running through the woods for use of the school and the public. Because the woods are open to people there are specific rules set forth to protect the woods. The rules are posted at the main entrance to the woods, in the student handbook, and also available at the outdoors business operating on campus. The rules are as follows: 1) Please stay on existing trails. 2) Leave-no-trace: carry out what you carry in; engage in human-powered, low-impact activities. 3) Please respect all plant and wildlife species. Do not remove any resource. 4) No overnight stays or open fires. 5) The Maryville College Woods is an alcohol/drug/smoke free area. 6) No motorized vehicles (unless authorized). 7) Please obey all signage. 8) Groups larger than 10 must notify the Office of Camps and Conference & Event Services before arrival. 9) Pets must be on a leash and remain on the trail and owners must clean up after pets. 10) Bicycles are permitted in designated areas only. Along with these rules there are groups dedicated to the protection of the woods: the committee Friends of the College Woods, the club Environmental Action Team, Mountain Challenge employees, and others.
