A brief description or a copy of the institution’s policy regarding interdisciplinary research:
Interdisciplinarity is highly valued both in teaching and in research here. This institution strongly prioritizes teaching in tenure and promotion, but an active and ongoing program of research or other professional development is expected for promotion at all levels. Tenure and promotion are currently decided by the the Faculty Personnel Standards Committee (FPSC), of which the Dean of the College is a member (though all decisions must be approved by both the President of the College and the Board of Directors). In these decisions, proof of interdisciplinary research, especially where it can be shown to inform classroom content, is highly valued, because the College's commitment to liberal arts education privileges learning across boundaries, for professors as well as students. Thus research on interdisciplinary issues such as sustainability is of significant positive interest to FPSC as it makes tenure and promotion decisions.
