A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
The team charged with completing the STARS inventory surveyed faculty regarding sustainability-focused and sustainability-related courses, using a survey instrument in which "sustainability-focused" and "sustainability-related" were defined using language from the STARS survey. The general definition of "sustainability" backing these terms is "meeting the economic, ecological and social needs of the day without impairing the chances or development of future generations." This is the definition that emerged from the UN Conference on Sustainability held in Rio in 1992. Although this definition does not specifically and officially apply to our curriculum, it is the definition which is used in the College's sustainability plan which has been reviewed by the Board of Director at Maryville College. The courses offered that are 'sustainability-focused or 'sustainability-related' are identified as such in the course descriptions in the larger Maryville College Schedule of Courses Catalog.
