Part 1. Greenhouse gas emissions inventory

Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory within the previous three years that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:
Scope 1 emissions from university-owned vehicles

Data for university-owned vehicles was collected using odometer readings for each vehicle in the year 2019 and early 2020. The difference between the readings is how miles driven was derived for each vehicle. Vehicles were segregated into fuel type, either gasoline or diesel to get total miles driven each fuel type.

Scope 1 mobile combustion emissions were calculated with the GHG Protocol’s calculation tool using the distance-based method with EPA’s 2018 emission factors. All vehicles fall under the ‘light-duty’ vehicle type which includes vans, pick-up trucks and SUV’s. The distance-based method was used because the university does not track fuel receipts or gallons for each vehicle, only odometer miles.

Scope 1 emissions data from natural gas

All data for years 2017-2019 was collected from Marquette University’s two natural gas service providers, WE Energies and Symmetry Energy for all commercial properties on campus. Exclusions include (1) buildings and spaces that are owned by Marquette University but leased out; and (2) 152 university apartments (residential classified accounts). Difficulty in obtaining the data from our service provider for these types of accounts was a challenge. The gross square feet for these properties is included in the submission.

Scope 2 emissions data from purchased electricity

All data for years 2017-2019 was collected from our electricity provider WE Energies for all commercial properties. Exclusions include buildings and spaces that are owned by Marquette but leased out and 128 university apartments.

Scope 2 emissions data from purchased steam

All data for years 2017-2019 was collected from our steam service provider WE Energies for all commercial properties.

Calculations

Electricity, district steam, and natural gas emissions were calculated using an Excel tool created by Noelle Brigham, Professor of Practice at the Opus College of Engineering at Marquette University. The tool uses the Environmental Protection Agency’s GHG emission factors for each source based on the year.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
Yes

A brief description of the GHG inventory verification process:
