Campus Engagement

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Campus Engagement:
Sustainability Interns will work to operationalize sustainability through organizing events, developing creative programming and initiatives, conducting peer-to-peer outreach, collecting & analyzing data,and conducting research. Project content focuses on five main impact areas: academics,operations, engagement, planning & administration and innovation/leadership.
Some examples of how this has been executed are as follows:
-Student sustainability interns planning Campus Sustainability Month events that engage student in hands on workshops
-Data collection using university software to examine feasibility of installing EV charging stations on campus
-Working with dining services contractor to analyze data for STARS Food and Beverage purchasing credit
-Student soil research in campus garden beds

Public Engagement

MUNK, located in Mashuda Hall, partners with dining services to recover unused food from on-campus dining centers. Once collected, staff and volunteers then repurpose the food in a variety of creative ways to build nourishing meals, which are then delivered to those in need throughout the community.

Energy

The Werner Sustainable Energy Lab is an ~ 1100 ft2 for both lab space and office space. Currently the lab is equipped with eight 3-phase power outlets; each is 480V/200A which translates to a total of 1.3 MVA. There is a plan in place to install dyno setups capable of testing electrical machines of various power and speed ratings by end of the calendar year. The lab has state-of-the art PCs and software. The focus of the research group is energy sustainability. The team conducts research on advanced electrical machines, drives and power converters. The applications covered include solar, wind and transportation electrification, among others.

The Lunda Room, located on the second floor of the AMU, will now feature Innovation Kitchen, an interactive unique dining experience. It will be open for lunch and feature culinary demonstrations Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Every day will feature themed artisan buffets, a la carte options, and a chance to sit at the Innovation Kitchen bar to see the action take place.

The Water Quality Center brings together researchers, private foundations, industry, the government and others to solve problems related to lake, river and groundwater quality. These problems often involve municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, storm water runoff and drinking water. Research is often multidisciplinary and is performed by experts from engineering, biological sciences, mathematics, statistics and computer science, as well as other disciplines. The Water Quality Center facilities include laboratories, computing resources and offices. The center laboratories, located in Engineering Hall, include more than 3,700 square feet of space and are equipped to perform physical, chemical and biological analyses of water, wastewater, soil and sludge. Major equipment includes environmental chambers, atomic adsorption spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs and equipment for performing bench- and pilog-scale investigations. The center also has molecular biology equipment to characterize microbial cultures including thermocyclers, gel boxes and gel imaging equipment.
