MacEwan University provides a living wage to even the lowest paid entry workers. Pay scales with benefits start at $16.32 per hour ($29,694 annual) as of July 2013, and increase to $16.48 per hour as of January 2014. This is well above the Alberta minimum wage of $9.95 effective September 2013.

Contractors with employees not working directly for MacEwan University are expected to provide wages to workers in Alberta in accordance with Alberta’s Employment Standards Regulation. MacEwan University does not have a means to track contractor employees.

The United Way cites “as much as” $15.00 per hour as a living wage in Edmonton. Studies in Calgary, a city comparable to Edmonton, found that $13.00 per hour with benefits or $14.50 per hour without benefits was sufficient to provide a living wage in Calgary, based on the Statistics Canada 2012 before-tax Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) amount for an individual with no dependents.

Regular, full-time employees
The lowest paid regular FT employees could be paid a salary as low as $16.48/hour ($29,991.38/annum), which represents step 1 of pay band 1 of our salary grid for support staff. This employment group receives salary increments after each 12 months of service.
These employees are entitled to the full benefits package, in accordance with article 17.0 of the MacEwan Staff Association collective agreement. The package includes supplemental health and dental benefits, employee family assistance program, defined-benefit pension plan participation, short and long term disability insurances, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, $450/yr health spending account, as well as vacation and access to other leaves.

Regular, part-time employees
The lowest paid regular PT employees could be paid a salary as low as $16.48/hour, which represents step 1 of pay band 1 of our salary grid for support staff, and may work as low as 0.5FTE (17.5 hours/week). This could equate to an annual salary of $14,995.19/annum. This employment group receives salary increments after each 1820 hours, an equivalent year of service.
These employees are entitled to the full benefits package, in accordance with article 17.0 of the MacEwan Staff Association collective agreement. The lowest paid instructional sessional faculty member could be paid $85.83 per instructional hour. Typically hired for a minimum of a single course, this individual would be paid a $3,862.35 to teach 1 course. This employment group receives salary increments after each 1600 instructional hours.
The lowest paid professional resources (e.g., librarian, counsellor) sessional faculty member could be paid $31.83/hour. This employment group receives salary increments after each 6400 hours.
These employees are not entitled to the benefits package, if they work less than 0.6FTE; however, do receive additional vacation pay of 8%.
