The mission of the Department of Multicultural Life (DML) is to provide transformative leadership in creating a Macalester community that is equitable, inclusive, and socially just for everyone.

A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence, anti-oppression, anti-racism, and/or social inclusion trainings and activities:
One of Macalester's learning goals is for students to demonstrate intercultural knowledge and competence. This is achieved through the requirement for students to take at least one class designated as a US Identities and Differences course, which is a graduation requirement to have on their transcript. Additionally, included in first year students' orientation is a training led by other students entitled People, Oppression, and Power.

The Department of Multicultural Life runs the continuous Allies Project, which is a group of faculty, administrators, and students who are committed to creating a safe environment and community for all people regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, religion, class, age, or ability. Allies of the Allies Project provide support and resources to individuals and/or groups who are exploring their own feelings and/or are struggling with issues related to their multiple identities. Programming for the Allies Project is ongoing and introductory workshops are hosted year-round.

In addition to Allies, the Employment Services Department hosts a yearly professional development session called Chautauqua which includes cultural competence workshops.

The Serie Center, which provides faculty development, also provides professional development opportunities around social inclusion, cultural competency, and anti-oppression.
