A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:
Macalester purchase or replace one computer per full time professional staff member every four years and for public labs or classrooms every three years. Those computers that are no longer up to standard but still functional are donated to over 30 nonprofits or charity organizations around the Twin Cities.
In the last year (from April 1, 2009 to April 1, 2010), Macalester donated over 233 computers to organizations such as Computers for Kids, the Group for Improvement of Computer Literacy and Exchange, YMCA Camp Warren, and North Saint Paul School District, to name just a few.
If a computer does not work anymore, it is recycled. Macalester has worked to lessen their impact by sending their waste to a responsible recycling company— Highpoint Environmental, which is located in Ham Lake, MN. They send information on when, where, and how much of Macalester’s electronic waste was sent where.
