A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contribute to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:
The recovery of demolition materials has been highly emphasized in the past three buildings constructed on campus. The Markim Hall construction project was a notable example. Through careful separation of materials during demolition of the building previously on this site, and of scrap debris from the construction process, the team was able to divert 95 percent of the resulting waste from landfills. Some of these materials, such as carpet and gypsum scarps, concrete and asphalt, were recycled. Wood debris were sent to an energy-recovery facility and used to make electricity.
