A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Zero Waste Committee The Zero Waste Committee at Macalester College brings together the Sustainability Office, Facilities Services, and Campus Life departments, and invested students, staff and faculty, to plan new ways to move to our Zero Waste by 2020 goal. The committee organizes the successful Move-Out program, disseminates information regarding our waste reduction, and coordinates student projects. Students involved with the Zero Waste Committee led the program to have our food waste food waste hauled to a pig farm as pig food. This development reduced Macalester's overall waste by one-third. In 2010-2011, the committee oversaw a student initiated vermicompost pilot project in two dormitories. The committee also worked with students and staff to develop the MacFree Swap listing service on the college intranet and the MacFree Swap tables in the Sustainability Office. The Zero Waste Committee projects have saved Macalester money and significantly reduced waste.
