The Campus Sustainability Council, comprising students, faculty, and staff, began its duties in Fall 2008. Each member of the Council serves on at least one of four active task groups that also include other members of the Luther community. Sustainability Council meetings are open to the campus community. The Sustainability Council votes to recommend policies and programs to the Presidential Cabinet for approval. It also approves funding for sustainability grants and provides feedback on new programs, initiatives and ideas generated from the task groups. The task groups are:

-Energy and Water
-Sustainable Foods
-Land Use
-Responsible Investment

A brief description of each sustainability office:

The Center for Sustainable Communities has a Faculty Director (0.33 FTE), a part-time Sustainability Coordinator (0.83 FTE), a Sustainability Fellow (full-time), and many student workers.

The Center for Sustainable Communities coordinates all sustainability initiatives at Luther College. The mission of the Center is to promote sustainability and be a catalyst for change on campus and in the region.

Rooted in our call to be good stewards of the Earth and responsible citizens in the global community, the mission of the Center for Sustainable Communities at Luther College is to promote sustainability and be a catalyst for change on campus and in the region through education, outreach, and collaboration.

Our Vision
We envision a prosperous, equitable, and ecologically healthy world where Luther College, Northeast Iowa and the Driftless Region are seen as models of sustainable communities.

Luther College will play a vital role in bringing about that world while providing unique opportunities for students and giving them the skills and abilities to meet sustainability challenges.

The Luther College Board of Regents is the governing body for the institution. A Facilities and Sustainability Committee consisting of Regents and community members meets three times a year in coordination with Regents meetings to discuss issues related to Facilities and Sustainability. Staff from the Center for Sustainable Communities are invited to present at least once/year to this group.
