A brief description of how sustainability is included in new employee orientation:

All new staff are invited to attend a new employee sustainability orientation. Human Resources sends a monthly list of new employees, and we reach out to them with a welcome and contact information immediately. Orientations are offered on a quarterly basis and are led by the Center for Sustainable Communities, with a welcome from HR to provide a connection between sustainability and broader campus vision. This one hour lunch and conversation is designed to both create and enhance community, and to provide an introduction to the concept of sustainability. The gathering comments include a history of sustainability at Luther with a special emphasis on how students have been change agents throughout time. The orientation touches on renewable energy production, energy conservation, energy efficiency, zero waste goals, alternative transportation, food waste reduction programs, land stewardship and our work in the community. As welcome gifts, we offer new employees a variety of items to assist them in living sustainably on campus, including stainless steel coffee cups; a variety of (new, and some used--all can be exchanged or returned) books on topics such as local flora and fauna, sustainable food, climate change; maps of campus walking trails; personal compost collection containers; and "tiny trash cans" that can hang inside their deskside recycling container.
