A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:
The Diversity Council is a standing committee of the college composed of faculty, administrators, and students, and representing every academic division of the college, the office of human resources, and the Diversity Center. The Council acts as the main campus voice on issues of diversity, including the status of women and other historically underrepresented groups; advises and supports campus diversity programming, training, and faculty and staff development; supports and assists the staff of the Diversity Center; and serves as an outreach resource to the Decorah community.
The Diversity Center provides services and assistance for U.S. minority and international students at Luther, and offers educational programming and events for all Luther students. The Center works to promote a greater appreciation and a deeper understanding of the diverse individuals and groups that make up our campus, strengthen access to multicultural perspectives within the tradition of a liberal arts education, and advocate for policies that safeguard the inclusion and participation of all members of the community.
The Diversity Center is a resource that activates, develops, and enhances diversity consciousness and intercultural competence with the goal of making the campus climate more inclusive for everyone.The Diversity Center staff:
- Assists students, faculty, and staff to effectively manage diversity challenges
- Collaborates with other departments and groups to provide education and entertainment
- Serves as academic advisors
- Takes the time to talk with anyone who comes in and takes a seat. Conversations are sometimes light and other times serious.

Luther College utilizes the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) with various groups on campus, including social work and education students, student life professional staff and student leadership groups. Members of the staff and faculty are trained administrators.
