A brief description of the themed semester, year, or first-year experience:
All first year students are also required to participate in a sustainability focused first year service project. Past projects have included; collecting heirloom seeds at Seed Savers, helping out in the Luther College Gardens, cleaning bricks from an old school that was torn down in Decorah so they can be reused in other building projects, and weeding out the invasive species in several Decorah parks. A special extension of the sustainability focused first-year experience this year was the use of Professor David Faldet's book, Oneota Flow, as the summer reader for first year students. The book discusses how the Upper Iowa River has been changed and affected by the colonization and development of the Decorah area, and emphasizes the interconnectedness of people and the natural world.
