A brief description of the campaign(s):
Luther has been holding a month-long campus energy competition since February of 2007 to raise energy awareness and conservation. This project is a collaboration between ECO - Luther’s student environmental group - and Luther Sustainability. Energy Evolution events have included a phantom load power energy fair, a campus blackout, and annual energy reduction competitions between residence halls on campus. Residents of the hall that reduces use the most from baseline data will receive prizes. Past prizes for on-campus competitions include a pizza party for the winning dorm, solar-powered iPods, Netflix subscriptions and bicycles. Scoring is based completely on how much water and energy each dorm saves. Weekly electricity and water readings are taken from each dorm and compared to the baselines as percent reductions. This year Luther is using the same techniques, but is participating in the Campus Conservation Nationals, competing against other colleges as well as between residence halls.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):
Individual residence halls significantly reduce their usage during the competition. One year Farwell Hall had a reduction of 123.63 watt-hours per person per day, and Baker village had a water reduction of 1.1 gallons per person per day. Also, the concept of a phantom load is consistently driven home during the competition. Students who learn about it remain very conscious of unplugging their chargers when not in use.
