A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
Through LMU's partnership with the non-profit Global Green, LMU partnered with a low-income senior housing unit in Long Beach, California to introduce composting education and resources. The community gets the benefits of education and socialization as well as the the economic benefits of reduced waste hauling bills. The ecological benefit is that food waste is diverted from the landfill and turned into compost that is used to grow fresh food on site for the community. The senior community (Long Beach) was actively involved sending a representative to an on campus event co-sponsored by Global Green. LMU representatives also went to the community in Long Beach to educate tenants about composting and to help them set up composting infrastructure. The education programming was tailored to tenants level of expertise and the needs they had expressed during the planning process.

LMU partnered with the 5 Gyres Institute and signed on to their Ambassador Program. The Program helps survey key locations around the world collecting detailed data on trash. LMU worked with 5 Gyres throughout the Los Angeles area. The trash is tracked through a mobile web-based application that surveys and analyzes plastic pollution. The information collected throughout Los Angeles helped measure LA's plastic footprint and will later be used to address plastic pollution.
