Recyclemania

A brief description of the campaign:

Recyclemania is a national recycling competition that LMU participates in every year. This competition helps the university gauge its recycling efforts. The purpose of the competition is to raise awareness and participation of the student body as well as faculty and staff. Email blasts and social media are used to promote the event to the campus community. All promotion is targeted at all LMU community members. The campaign is promoted in the campus newspaper, The Loyolan. Results are reported continuously throughout the length of the competition to show progress and generate further support and participation. The LMU Facilities Management department also increased recycling opportunities by purchasing new recycling stations. In high traffic areas, regular trash cans were replaced with a three-compartment recycling station for solid waste, paper, and beverage containers, making it more convenient for students, faculty, and staff to recycle. This competition runs through the spring semester at LMU.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

The institution is successful in the recycling campaign by reducing waste numbers and increasing recycling around campus. Furthermore we can see/measure an increase in recycling as a result of campus participation from faculty, staff, and students. Our recycling numbers also remain high each year as reported by the challenge.

Strawless Campaign

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Green LMU helped campaign and promote the reduction of single-used plastics including the elimination of straws from four of LMU's main dining locations. Straws were also eliminated during the Annual Go Green Game at the concession.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

After removing the straws in 2018, LMU saw a 39% reduction in straw usage during the first year of implementation.
