Through LMU's multi-year partnership with the non-profit Global Green, LMU has partnered with a low-income senior housing unit in Long Beach, California to bring them composting education and resources. The community gets the benefits of education and socialization, and the economic benefit of reduced waste hauling bills and not having to purchase compost for their garden. The ecological benefit is the food waste is diverted from the landfill and turned into compost that is used to grow fresh food on site for the community. The senior community is actively involved, they are sending a representative to an event held on LMU's campus co-sponsored by Global Green that will bring in master gardeners to talk to LMU's local community and students about composting and gardening practices. LMU representatives are also going to the community in Long Beach to teach them about composting and to help them set up the infrastructure to compost their food waste; the education programming will be tailored to their level of expertise and the needs they have expressed in the planning process.
