A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:
Loyalist College is mandated to report its energy consumption figures to the Province of Ontario's Ministry of Energy on an annual basis. However, the Ministry report does not include gasoline and provides an aggregated figure for total GHG Emissions (i.e. it does not break out Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions).
For the purposes of this STARS report, we combined the data gathered for Ministry reporting with gasoline consumption data tracked by our Accounts Payable department and used a custom tool based on Clean Air - Cool Planet Campus Carbon Calculator and updated with Canadian and Ontario emission factors to calculate our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
A change in methodology was initiated for the purposes of Ministry reporting beginning in 2015 (for reporting year 2013). To facilitate an accurate comparison going forward, we chose 2013 as our baseline year.

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives, including efforts made during the previous three years:
Loyalist College has been making significant improvements to its energy infrastructure for the past two decades. In 2003, the College was recognized by Natural Resources Canada for its energy efficiency efforts which included interior lighting retrofits and boiler and chiller replacements. Loyalist has continued to realize energy efficiencies mitigating the release of GHG emissions through more recent and ongoing projects such as the installation of building automation controls, hot water tank conversions, roofing upgrades, removal of redundant laser printers, and extensive lighting retrofits across campus. The Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre was built in 2010/2011 with energy efficiency as a top priority. The Centre earned LEED® Silver Certification from the Canada Green Building Council and a Certificate of Recognition from the High Performance New Construction (HPNC) Program in recognition of Loyalist's commitment to energy efficiency.
Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The methodology for this GHG Emissions Inventory differs from that used by the Ministry of Energy. The website URL provided above links to the Ministry report and therefore, the stated emissions in STARS will differ slightly from the figures in the linked report.
