A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation:
• The College’s Sustainability Coordinator spoke at the mandatory residence move-in meeting which had an audience of approx. 450 students.
• We had water bottle bowling in the cafeteria which educated students about the impact of plastic waste and what they can do to reduce it. This event was open to all students. Travel mugs and coupons for free hot beverages when using a reusable mug were given out as prizes to every participant.
• During the Getting Connected Fair, an event open to all students, the Sustainability Coordinator and student volunteers encouraged students to play Eco-Footprint Bean Bag Toss, an interactive game that asks students how big they think their environmental footprint is and what they can do to reduce it. Travel mugs and coupons for free hot beverages when using a reusable mug were given out as prizes.
• Campus tour guides were trained on the College’s sustainability features and integrated that information into campus tours.
• The College’s Sustainability Coordinator spoke at the College’s Pre-Health program orientation on the meaning of sustainability and what students can do on campus and off to reduce their environmental footprint.
• Giant Jenga used leftover wood from the construction renovation program.
• Minimized print-based Orientation information (faculty letters, schedules etc.).
• Created an iPad app for The Great Campus Chase instead of paper instructions.
