1st Campaign
Spring Greening Day
A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:
Both students and employees of the university are engaged each year at LSU Sustainability’s Spring Greening Day. The university posts reminders about the event and then students and employees alike volunteer around the campus to help plant the new plants for the spring season.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
The positive impacts of the campaign go beyond making the campus more attractive, one of the main benefits is erosion control. The plants are put in the ground a few weeks before the wet weather hits the city, this ensures that the newly planted plants will have a strong enough root system to hold onto the soil that surrounds them. By preventing the soil from draining into the storm-drains around the campus fertilizers are not able to enter the sewer systems and eventually the Mississippi river. This limits non-point source pollution in the river and can help control algal blooms.
