A brief description of the sustainable food and beverage purchasing program:
LSU Dining contract with Capital City Produce and Sysco. Sysco does not provide any food meeting this criteria. Note from Capital City: The major issue with local produce in this market is the growing season. Our best time for local produce is May/June and September/October. From November or first frost through late April the only items readily available are sweet potatoes and strawberries when the weather is good. Louisiana Satsuma’s are available in November and early December. Right now (June) the items we have local are peppers, squash, zucchini, eggplant, Creole tomatoes, corn and cucumbers.
