The sustainability council is made of of faculty, staff and student members from all disciplines and began in the year 2009 with the support of the University President.The council meets three times each year to discuss the feasibility of new projects and annual events: including America Recycles Day, Earth Week Events, and The Pumpkin Pitch. With the help of the council, Lewis University has began a composting project, joined the 2013 Eco Challenge, achieved the silver level of the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact, re-branded sustainability on campus by creating new marketing material include a new sustainability logo and signed the Will County Sustainability Network Compact. The committee has been involved in our Campus Sustainability Roadmap.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Through the council and the sustainability officer, a sustainablity roadmap has been developed for the campus. Reaching the goals outlined in the document steers the council. In 2023, the sustainablitly officer assisted in the installation of a new apiary on campus. Twelve new EV stations are currently being installed. The campus participated in the 2024 Campus Race to Zero Waste. The sustainability officer with the help of the sustainability club hosted the SMHEC in person meeting in February of 2024. The officer has been heavily involved in the sustainability club and introducing more events throughout the year. This past year we held upcycling events, planting events, and hosted many information tables. We have begun collecting plastic bags and are in the process of reducing the sale of plastic beverage bottles. This year will be join the plastic coalition.
