Through the efforts of the sustainability council and the campus sustainability officer, environmental stewardship is considered when making any University decision. The council and the sustainability officers have been involved in the major renovations and creation of LEED buildings, a recycling overhaul and improvement, the addition of new programs including the acceptance of more nontraditional items including electronics, scrap metal, and much more. The council and officer have also helped in the release of a new sustainability logo and image to keep sustainability efforts current and exciting for campus members. The installation of two electric vehicle charging stations and a food scrap composting program on campus are the most notable accomplishments of the council.
In 2015 and 2016, the Council also added a new sustainability program, known as the Pumpkin Pitch. This is an event that the University was able to team up with Will County Green, all of Will County is invited to come on campus and compost pumpkins and gourds after Halloween. The Lewis University physics program got involved this year by creating catapults to make the event even more exciting.
The officer has been heavily involved in the sustainability club and introducing more events throughout the year. This year we will have a Weigh the Waste Event, partnered with our food service provider. Also, a compost demonstration that is partnered with Will County. Lastly, the officer will take various student groups to tour some of our waste facilities.
