Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Thera Metrey: Mushrooms in Sierra Leone
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
This outcome in association with World Hope helps to address hunger and malnutrition in Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone, 85% of agriculture is rice farming, the majority of which is harvested during a four month period. This creates a large level of seasonal unemployment. 46% of households are food insecure, according to a measure of per capita access to calories by FAO. 83% of preschool aged children are anemic, as are 60% of pregnant women (WHO). Mushrooms can be grown year round, grown on agricultural waste such as rice straw husk, can be used as a meat, and possess antiviral qualities. This outcome researched the cultivation and production system of mushroom growth and prepared a business model for Sierra Leone to utilize to address their hunger and malnutrition issues.
