Course Inventory

A copy of the institution’s inventory of its sustainability course offerings and descriptions:
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
One

A brief description of the methodology used to determine the total number of courses offered and to identify sustainability course offerings, including the definitions used and the process for reviewing and/or validating the course inventory :
A set of keywords was defined to be descriptors of sustainability. These keywords were used to filter the academic course catalog for the year 2018-2019. Each course description that had 6 or more matching words was then examined further to determine if it was sustainability-related or included sustainability-focused. Sustainability-focused courses are courses in which the primary and explicit focus is on sustainability and/or understanding and solving one or more sustainability challenges. Sustainability-related courses are courses focused on a topic other than sustainability, but incorporate a unit or module on sustainability or a sustainability challenge, including one or more sustainability-focused activities, or integrate sustainability issues throughout the courses. The rest of the courses not caught with this keyword coding were reviewed to see if they were sustainability-related or included sustainability-focused. Professors of ambiguous courses were emailed to receive the syllabus to make an informed decision. All included courses had to address more than one pillar of sustainability (social, environmental, economic). Inventory was reviewed by the Lehigh Sustainability Council Education Subcommittee.

How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Note that the number of departments in this section (31) differs from AC-9 (37) due to some courses belonging to "interdepartmental programs", rather than a specific department; whereas in AC-9, faculty belong to specific departments. These courses are listed under department titles such as "Interdepartmental Arts" or "Interdepartmental Engineering". Note that the methodology has changed from last year. We were only including courses that cover more than one pillar of sustainability (social, environmental, and economic) rather than just one. Last year we included many courses that only really met one pillar, so those did not all count this year.
