A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The Sustainable Lawrence initiative hosts a booth at the Campus Resources Fair during Welcome Week and is open to all new students including transfer students.
Lawrence's Center for Community Engagement and Social Change (volunteer center) offers many volunteer opportunities related to sustainability during its "Into the Streets" event (now called Community Engagement Bazaar) at the start of each year. The purpose of this program is to introduce new students to the local community and local organizations where they can volunteer. The event is required for all new students. The Center organizes its programing around relevant community issues, many of which include sustainability. During the event, students can get involved with volunteer activities such as street clean-ups, garden planting, serving food, and engaging with local youth organizations.
